Troops under General Barrett inflicted a sharp reverse today on the invading Afghans at Bagh Springs. The whole of the frontier area was up in arms with tribesmen threatening Landi Khotal and martial law being proclaimed in Peshawar. It was expected however that General Barrett, well equipped with guns and airplanes, would soon control the situation. Reports had been reaching London for some time about the possibility of an Afghan incursion following the murder of the pro-British Emir Habibullah. His third son, Amanullah Khan, who took over the throne, was known to be hostile toward the government of India.
Three momentous events took place on the day that did the nation proud. Firstly, three underground nuclear tests at Pokhran Range in Rajasthan, which included a hydrogen bomb, were tested; secondly, the successful test firing of the 'Trishul Missile' and thirdly, the maiden Certification test flight of 'Hansa-3', the first-all Composite indigenous two seater aircraft.

Members of the trust set up by late artiste Sushila Rani Patel allege her husband's granddaughter locked them out on Tuesday.
The ongoing property dispute regarding the 8,000 sq ft Pali Hill bungalow that belonged to the late artiste, Sushila Rani Patel, turned violent on Tuesday, when members of the trust set up by Sushila Rani clashed with her husband's granddaughter and her relatives.
Ownership of the bungalow, 'Girnar', estimated worth at least Rs 50 crore, came into dispute barely 10 days after Sushila Rani's death on July 24 due to a cardiac arrest.
The trust members said that Sangeet Natak Academy laureate Sushila Rani had willed the entire property to the trust, even as her husband Baburao Patel's granddaughter Geeta Patel-D'Souza claimed she was the legal heir, and moved into the first floor of the bungalow with her two children and sister-in-law after the artiste's death.
The trust chairperson, Neela Shinde, alleged that early on Tuesday, the trust's assistant secretary Ranjana Ramji got a call from a yoga instructor, Pratish Raj, saying Patel-D'Souza had locked him and the students while they were practising inside a ground floor room.
"I reached the spot along with my husband and tried opening the door, but Geeta's sister-in-law slapped me. My husband was also slapped by Geeta," Shinde said, alleging that Geeta's sister-in-law smashed Ranjana's mobile phone when she tried recording the violence.
The trust members called up police, and alleged officers at Khar Police Station agreed to register a non-cognisable complaint (third in three weeks) only after nearly four hours of persuasion.
Fight resumes
The trust members said that when they returned to the bungalow from the police station, they found the gates had been locked, and it was only after they called up the cops again that one of the gates was opened. "We have written to Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria to intervene, and have also sought police protection as Geeta and her relatives are constantly threatening to beat us up," Shinde said.
Patel-D'Souza, however, said it was the yoga instructor who had turned violent. "I have asked them to prove that they are a part of the trust in the first place," she said, adding that the property rightfully belonged to her as she was the heir "not just of the family but also the legacy".
Inspector Dyaneshwar Ganore from Khar Police Station said that the matter was sub-judice, hence it won't be appropriate to take action against either of the two parties. "We have asked them to resolve the matters amicably," he said.
Mumbai Mirror reported a week ago regarding the dispute over the property (Iconic 8,000-sq-ft Pali Hill bungalow in property dispute, MM, August 4), days after Sushila Rani's death.
Sushila Rani was the third wife of Baburao Patel, who founded India's first film trade magazine. Patel, who also produced films and was a member of Parliament, bought the Pali Hill bungalow in the 1950s and its rights had passed on to Sushila Rani after his death in 1982.
Sushila Rani was living alone in the house after Baburao's death, and strived to keep Indian classical music alive through Shiv Sangeetanjali, which was formed by Baburao and her in 1961. Geeta Patel-D'Souza is Baburao's granddaughter from his late second wife Shirin. The bungalow has featured in the famous garage scenes of Kishore Kumar's 1958 hit 'Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi', and scores of other popular Bollywood movies.
I have fond memories of the place. Those were my early years in Mumbai and I received a lot of love. Sushila Rani always wanted the place to be a centre for arts.

Hours after actress and singer Sushilarani’s death, a woman calling herself the grand-daughter of Baburao Patel’s second wife, occupied the first floor of the bungalow Girnar, sparking a row
Mumbai : Within a week of actress and singer Sushilarani Patel’s death, the Pali Hill bungalow which was her home for half a century has become the scene of a sordid succession drama.
Some hours after her death on July 24, a woman named Geeta Patel D’Souza, who calls herself the grand-daughter of Baburao Patel’s second wife, Shirin Patel, occupied the first floor of the bungalow, Girnar. Sushilarani married Baburao Patel, a film producer and journalist, in 1945. She was his third wife and they had no children.
While Sushilarani lived on the first floor of the stately bungalow, the ground floor was used by the Sushilarani Baburao Patel Trust, which conducted music, dance and yoga classes. The bungalow was used in the shooting of the evergreen Kishore Kumar movie, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’.
The trustees complained to the Khar police about Geeta but were sent back by the cops who said that they could not do anything since the matter was in court. Geeta had filed a suit in the high court in 2011 claiming that she owned the bungalow.
The trustees say Baburao had settled all the claims and had willed the bungalow to Sushilarani, who formed the trust in 1989. “Geeta has been disturbing our classes and yelling at us to move out of the bungalow,’’ said Neela Shinde, chairperson of the trust.
On Tuesday morning, Geeta allegedly abused and hit a trustee named Ranjana and her husband Ramji. “Geeta grabbed me by my hair and kicked me. Her sister-in-law Chandan D’Souza beat up my husband when we came there on hearing that Geeta was creating a scene at the yoga classes,’’ said Ranjana. They approached Khar police station which registered it as a non-cognisable case.
Geeta was summoned at the police station too. However, at 12.30 pm on Tuesday, she allegedly locked the gates trapping the yoga teacher, Pradish Raj, and the caretaker, Kartik Ramachandran, inside, while Sushilarani’s maid Maria and the watchmen were pushed outside. “Geeta had brought two men with her who were also telling us to get out. Karthik and I were locked inside until the police came and rescued us,” said Raj.
Asked for her version, Geeta said, “I won’t stoop so low. For all you know, they might just end up saying I did cartwheels on them. All of the trustees are just delusional.”
“We have no interest in acquiring the property. We are simply following what Sushilaji has told us in her will and that is to take care of this property and carry out the cultural activities there. I was never directed to hand over the keys of the house to someone else,” said Shinde.
